Oof. You ever find yourself, I dunno, completely lost in a sea of platformer games? Yeah, that was me. There are like a million out there now—or at least it feels that way. Anyway, I landed on this thing called Love Eternal at PAX East 2025. Figured it’d be just another pixelated jumper, but it hit different. Maybe ’cause it’s strangely offbeat. Or maybe I was just tired. Whatever, it stood out.
So, Love Eternal is this sibling project (honestly, siblings either kill it or kill each other over stuff like this). They were inspired by their move from Oregon to LA. Wildfires. Anime? They said Perfect Blue but I was only half-listening, truth be told.
The game’s wild. You start as Maya in this chill suburb scene, but then—boom—phone call. Family goes poof. House is different, like, ancient and creepy-ancient, not cool-ancient. Makes you feel kinda dizzy. Like when you stand up too fast and regret it immediately.
There’s this whole gravity flip trick. Maya’s running along and then—whoop—upside down on the ceiling. But you can’t go flipping willy-nilly forever. Gotta land, then flip. Grab these red stones mid-air, which lets you go flip again. Sounds simple, but your brain’s doing somersaults trying to nail these moves. If you look at the screen for too long, you might start seeing upside down in real life, too. Just my two cents.
Save points everywhere, thank goodness. It’s not a total rage quit game, but it gets tricky. Clearly, they’ve played Celeste and VVVVVV. Who hasn’t? Okay, maybe lots of people. But you get it.
The plot? Phew. Something about bitter memory castles and a lonely god. It’s enough to make you wanna keep Maya safe, though, kinda like looking after a kid sister. I expect I’ll either be kinda moved or mildly traumatized by the end. Four-hour ride, tops. Coming soon to all the places you’d expect: Xbox, Switch, PS4/5, PC.
There you go. Go take a break or something. Your brain probably needs it after trying to follow all this madness.
