Alright, here we go. So, Zynga just closed down Echtra Games, you know, those folks who made Torchlight 3? Yep, gone. It’s kind of like breaking up with an old friend, except it’s a business “strategic realignment.” Whatever that really means.
Echtra, if you remember, was cooked up by Max Schaefer after he left Runic Games. He’s the guy behind the original Torchlight and its sequel from back in 2012. Can you imagine just jumping from one company to create another? Anyway, he did that in 2016. So, fast forward a bit – Perfect World owns Torchlight 3. Zynga snapped up Echtra in 2021, but the plot thickens because Perfect World still grips onto Torchlight 3. Oh, and Echtra was busy with some mysterious RPG (cue dramatic music) and helped out with CSR Racing plus the bumpy Star Wars: Hunters.
Then Zynga’s like, “Hey, let’s hit pause on Echtra.” They’ve got this big shift in priorities, or resources, whatever jargon they use in corporate. Frankly, it sounds like a shuffling the deck chairs kinda scenario. They promised to be nice about it, treating the folks there as well as you can when you’re essentially saying, “Thanks, but bye.”
We’ll see where those developers land next. Maybe on their feet? Or… maybe they’ll cook up another game studio. Stranger things have happened.
