Plus, we’ve released the second trailer in a trilogy, which showcases some of the game’s amazing, surreal environments and intriguing characters, hinting at their connections with you, the player. ## What Is Karma: The Dark World?
“Karma: The Dark World” is a first-person, cinematic psychological thriller set in an alternate, cassette-futuristic timeline just after World War II. In this universe, a corporation called Leviathan has harnessed advanced technology to seize control of Eastern Germany. Under their oppressive regime, they enforce strict productivity and obedience.
Their methods are quite intense, ranging from mass surveillance and mind-altering drugs to a secret agency of Nightcrawlers—special agents known as ROAM agents. These agents are equipped to investigate crime scenes and conduct Mind Dives, a cutting-edge technology allowing them to delve into and interact with the memories of their subjects. These dives unearth the dark corners of human psychology, dealing with torment, trauma, and emotions.
In the game, you step into the shoes of Daniel McGovern, a ROAM agent assigned to probe a theft at one of Leviathan’s scientific institutes. What starts as a simple theft investigation soon spirals into a deeper quest exploring love, humanity, empathy, and the tangled web of morality.
## Creating the Dark World
For me, creating a game is a profound dialogue with the human soul that extends beyond books or films. It dives into real-life experiences and emotions. Our aim is to weave philosophical insights into our game design, and that’s mirrored in this title’s core theme—karma. The intricate play between cause and effect is a vital backbone in crafting this world, impacting character relationships and events.
With “Karma,” we’re pushing traditional storytelling boundaries, offering more than a narrative—it’s an experience that entertains and thought-provokes, acting as a mirror to reality that encourages players to find their own answers.
We use dramatic lighting contrasts and bold color schemes to immerse players in this surreal-meets-realism experience. Games like those from Remedy (think “Alan Wake” and “Control”) and works by David Lynch have heavily influenced our direction. Lynch’s masterpieces, such as “Twin Peaks” and “Eraserhead,” inspire us deeply. We aim to create an experience that lingers, blurring the line between what’s real and what’s illusionary.
Throughout the game, we nod to Lynch, and we hope players appreciate this journey with us.

During the game’s development, we’ve had the chance to utilize the PS5 Pro kit, which has allowed us to further enhance the visuals and performance of the world we we’ve built.
