With the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 8, Larian Studios wraps up its work on the RPG. While we’ll likely see some bug fixes dropped over time, the studio has made it clear that patch 8 is the final piece of extra content for this Dungeons & Dragons game. This shift allows Larian to fully focus on what’s coming next, with two new video games currently in development. Although it may be a while before we get a look at both projects, Larian CEO Swen Vincke assures us that development is progressing smoothly.
At this point, the details of Larian’s next projects are under wraps. Initially, the studio began crafting a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 but decided to pivot towards something entirely new. While the specifics remain a mystery, I’m hoping one of these RPGs explores a sci-fi setting. It would be exciting to see Larian apply its deep fantasy expertise in a fresh direction.
Whatever Larian is cooking up, Vincke is optimistic it will be as epic, if not more so, than Baldur’s Gate 3.
In a recent GameSpot interview, Vincke shared, “We’re deep in the trenches working on our next big thing. It’s shaping up quite well, actually, but it’s crazy ambitious. There are so many new things that we can do these days, so it’s complex.”
He continued, “On top of that, we’re trying to figure out how we’re going to be making two games. We’ve talked about that openly, that we’re working on two games. So organizing ourselves for that is also not the easiest thing in the universe because we make very complicated games with lots of permutations and agency for players. Predicting when those are going to be finished is hard.”
Vincke mentioned that Larian isn’t looking to expand its team significantly but plans to utilize its developers across both projects where possible. However, juggling two large games is no simple task, so we’ll have to stay tuned to see which title gets revealed first.
